    BOOK TWO

    (Psalms 42 – 72)

To the director. Masʹkil*1 for the sons of Koʹrah.

1 As the hind that longs for the water streams, So my very soul longs for you, O God.*1

    1. “O God,” MLXXVg; TSy, “O Jehovah.”

2 My soul indeed thirsts for God, for the living God.*1 When shall I come and appear [before]*2 God?

    1. “For the living God.” Heb., leʼElʹ chai.

    2. “And appear [before].” Heb., weʼe·ra·ʼehʹ penehʹ. Here, penehʹ is not translated “before,” but it combines with ʼe·ra·ʼehʹ for the rendering “appear.” LXXVg, “appear before”; TSy, “see [the face of].”

3 To me my tears have become food day and night, While [they]*1 say to me all day long: “Where is your God?”

    1. “They,” Sy and four Heb. mss.

4 These things I will remember, and I will pour out my soul within me. For I used to pass along with the throng, I used to walk slowly before them to the house of God,*1 With the voice of a joyful cry and thanksgiving, Of a crowd celebrating a festival.

    1. “God.” Heb., ʼElo·himʹ.

5 Why are you in despair, O my soul, And why are you boisterous within me? Wait for God, For I shall yet laud him as the grand salvation*1 of my person.*2

    1. Lit., “the salvations.” Heb., yeshu·ʽohthʹ, pl. to denote majesty.

    2. “My face,” LXXSyVg and vs 11; MT, “his face.” See 2Sa 17:11 ftn, “Person.”

6 O my God,*1 within me my very soul is in despair. That is why I remember you, From the land of Jordan and the peaks of Herʹmon,*2 From the little mountain.*3

    1. “O my God.” Heb., ʼElo·haiʹ.

    2. Or, “and the sacred places (peaks).”

    3. Lit., “from the mountain of littleness.” Heb., me·harʹ mits·ʽarʹ; by a correction, “Zion.”

7 Watery deep to watery deep*1 is calling At the sound of your (water-) spouts.*2 All your breakers and your waves— Over me they have passed.

    1. Or, “Surging waters to surging waters,” M; LXXVg, “Abyss to abyss.”

    2. “Your cataracts,” LXXVg.

8 By day Jehovah will command his loving-kindness,*1 And by night his song will be with me; There will be prayer to the God of my life.*2

    1. Or, “loyal love.”

    2. “To the God of my life,” M(Heb., leʼElʹ chai·yaiʹ)TLXXVg; Sy and many Heb. mss, “to the living God.” See vs 2.

9 I will say to God my crag: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I walk sad because of the oppression of the enemy?”

10 With murder against my bones those showing hostility to me have reproached me, While they say to me all day long: “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you in despair, O my soul, And why are you boisterous within me? Wait for God, For I shall yet laud him as the grand salvation of my person*1 and as my God.*2

    1. Lit., “my face.” See vs 5 ftn, “Person.”

    2. “And as my God.” Heb., wEʼ·lo·haiʹ.
